The Scottish Medievalists

Welcome to the website of The Scottish Medievalists, a body first set up in 1957 to promote and pursue the serious study of medieval Scotland. The membership includes historians, archaeologists, scholars of art, literature and place-names and many other disciplines. The organisation is recognised as a Scottish charity (Number SCO12617).

The Scottish Medievalists meet annually in January. Membership is by invitation only. The conference includes not only papers on medieval subjects but also reports on relevant activities in the previous years, panel and other discussions on research projects, and the formulation of future activity. The Trustees hold modest funds which are used to support Conference research projects for which such funding might otherwise not be available.

Amongst the most impressive of the achievements of The Scottish Medievalists is the Atlas of Scottish History to 1707, which we hope to make available on this website in the near future. The website will also contain other material about the Medievalists and their projects.
